Why We're Only
Choosing One*
Per Lake.
This is not a limitation we apologize for. It is the entire point. One exclusive franchisee per lake, protected territory, and zero local competition. Here is exactly why that matters for you.
* On lakes that cross state lines - such as Lake Tahoe (California and Nevada) and Bear Lake (Utah and Idaho) - it may make sense to award one franchise per state sharing that lake. Lake Tahoe in particular is large enough that operating a sailing school on the California side and a separate school on the Nevada side serves genuinely distinct communities. Territory decisions for border lakes are made on a case-by-case basis.
We're building a network,
not a chain.
Bonneville School of Sailing is not building a chain. We are building a network of respected, well-supported owners - one per lake - each holding the exclusive right to bring sailing to their inland lake community.
Every franchise system that scales too fast ends up with crowded territories, thin support, and a diluted brand. We built this system over 20 years on one lake, refined it until it worked without guesswork, and we are only now opening it to outside operators. We intend to keep it exclusive on purpose.
When you apply for your lake's territory, you are not competing against a dozen other Bonneville locations for students, marketing dollars, or our attention. You are the only one on that lake. That is the deal.
Twenty years of operating on one lake taught us what a well-run sailing school actually requires: consistent instruction standards, rigorous safety protocols, local relationships built over seasons, and an owner who is genuinely invested in their community. None of that is compatible with flooding the market with locations.
* On lakes that cross state lines - such as Lake Tahoe and Bear Lake - territory boundaries are evaluated individually. A lake like Tahoe is large enough to support one Bonneville school on the California side and one on the Nevada side, serving genuinely separate communities. These are the only exceptions to the one-per-lake rule, and they are decided case by case.
The market is yours.
All of it.
Being the only Bonneville franchisee on your lake means the market is yours. No second location undercutting your pricing. No competing school splitting your student base. No confusion in the marketplace about who the real sailing school is in your region.
It also means you get more from us. A smaller, hand-selected group of franchisees means our mentorship stays hands-on instead of stretched thin across hundreds of locations. When you call with a question about instructor certification, scheduling, or a safety protocol, you reach people who know your lake, your market, and your season - not a generic support queue.
For your local market, this translates directly into results: you become the first and only established, credentialed sailing school your lake community has ever had. Residents who have always wanted to learn to sail, but never had a local option, now have exactly one place to go. That place is you.

Full Territory Protection
One franchisee per lake, full stop. No second location, no competing school, no boundary disputes. Your lake is yours and only yours.*
Direct, Hands-On Mentorship
Direct access to the founding team, not a call center. Because we keep the network small and deliberate, you get real people who know your lake, your market, and your season.
First-Mover Advantage
First-mover position in a market with zero existing sailing schools. You are not entering a competitive market - you are creating the market from the ground up.
A Business Built to Last
We protect brand consistency across every territory we award. That means your school benefits from a reputation built by every other Bonneville owner in the country - and your school strengthens it for them. A rising tide lifts all boats, but only when we keep the fleet small and the standards high. This is a business built to last, not one competing against its own franchisees.

* Lakes that cross state lines - including Lake Tahoe (California and Nevada) and Bear Lake (Utah and Idaho) - are evaluated individually. On a lake like Tahoe, one franchise per state sharing that lake may be awarded, as the California shore and the Nevada shore serve genuinely distinct communities. These exceptions are determined case by case and do not affect single-state lake territories.
Once it's awarded,
it is closed.
Every lake has exactly one Bonneville territory available. Once it is awarded, it is closed. Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis, by lake and region, and qualified candidates who wait risk finding their lake already spoken for.
If you have been waiting for a reason to stop thinking about this and start acting on it, this is it. Submit your application today and find out if your lake is still open.
